FAQ: how do I remove hot wax strips without picking?

Image
An area many waxing therapists struggle with when starting out is removing hot wax without resorting to picking. Here’s a short little video from Andy Rouillard at Axiom Wax Academy, demonstrating various ways of lifting that first bit of non-strip wax... no flick required! 1. Peel and reveal If your hard wax has clearly defined edges and overlaps into hair-free skin, you can simply stretch the skin taut and peel back a corner to start your pull. The secret here is to make sure your edges are clean and even all the way around, which makes for trouble-free removal. If the strip doesn’t lift easily, try one of the following alternative methods. 2. Stick and lift Press the waxy tip of your spatula into the edge of the strip and lift briskly. The wax on the spatula will stick to the wax on the body, just enough to raise a tab for removal. 3. Press and pull Press the shiny, hair-free side of a recently removed piece of wax into a corner of wax still on the body, and use it as a

Wax Daddy says: wear sunscreen

Image
Use protection... wax style We should ALL be wearing sun protection, all year round, come rain or shine. You know it makes sense. But as the days get longer and the weather warms up, the need for a good SPF is more important than ever. Fact: just-waxed skin is more sun sensitive. Waxing removes some of the body’s natural protection, namely hair and dead skin cells. If that beautifully smooth, freshly waxed skin gets exposed to the sun, (a) it’s much more likely to burn, and (b) darker patches may develop where the skin becomes over-irritated (fancy technical term: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). This is especially true if the client has experienced any lifting/grazing. With this in mind, it’s really important that we are advising customers to use sunblock on their exposed bits after waxing. Remember Australia’s iconic slip-slop-slap sun protection campaign? Well, behold the Wax Daddy remix: RIP! SLIP! SLOP! It goes a little something like this... RIP out the hair. Av

Less 'ow' and more 'wow' - 13 steps to practically painless waxing

Trusted tricks for more comfortable waxing Let’s be honest: until someone invents the Ultimate Wax Bar, where every pull of the strip is accompanied by an intravenous shot of gin and chocolate, it’s unlikely that waxing is going to feature on many peoples list of ‘fun things to do’. The unfortunate fact is that pulling hair out by the root is always likely to have an element of some discomfort about it. But it doesn’t need to be dreaded - and neither should it be an exercise in endurance! Let me state from the off that I have never been a fan of numbing creams or recommending painkillers to clients. Aside from the possibility that here in the UK you could land yourself in hot water with your insurance provider, in my humble opinion they are an unnecessary faff and expense. Instead, there are a number of simple and cost effective steps that can be taken to introduce a little less ‘ouch’ and a little more ‘oooh’ into the treatment room. 1. Let it grow It sounds obvious, but h

New pre & post-wax skincare from Ashmira Botanica Congratulations, it’s quintuplets... πŸ‘ΆπŸ‘ΆπŸ‘ΆπŸ‘ΆπŸ‘Ά I’m a proud Wax Daddy today. My babies are finally here!! I’m pleased as punch to unveil the new waxing skincare line from Ashmira Botanica, which I’ve been working on for the past year. It’s an absolutely beautiful range, even if I do say so myself, incorporating both in-salon and retail items to support your waxing services. Every product is enriched with wonderful botanical extracts, natural butters and plant oils to protect and nurture the skin throughout every stage of hair removal. They all feel amazing, smell gorgeous and (of course) do a blinding job in the treatment room. I’m going to attempt a ‘Facebook Live’ video over the next few days to show off the little ’uns, but in the meantime here is a family portrait and a quick introduction to the new brood: Refreshing Skin Cleanser A gentle cleansing milk with apple amino acids, for use both before and after waxing

FAQ: how do I wax hard-to-reach hair on the sides of the back?

Image
A simple trick for waxing the sides of the torso During a back wax, it can be a struggle to reach all of the hair on the sides of the torso with your client lying flat on the couch, especially on more hirsute customers where their back and chest hair connects. That darn table top keeps getting in the way! But there is an easy and comfortable way to reach these areas without the need for any awkward twisting. When you sit your client up to wax his upper back, ask him to place one hand at a time on the opposite shoulder or behind his head. You can also ask him to lean slightly to the side in order to put a better stretch in the skin (this is particularly useful when waxing larger/heavier-set customers). Run a line of strip wax up from the waist to the underarm, and then remove away from the spine as per the rest of the back. This is also a handy trick for creating an even, natural-looking division between smooth skin on the back and the unwaxed hair on the chest and tummy, or an

5 ways to use oil when waxing

Image
Oil is one of the most versatile tools in a modern waxer’s bag of tricks. Many waxing brands now include a pre or post-wax oil in their line-up, but there is more to this wonder product than first meets the eye. Here are some ideas for getting the most out of our slippery chum… Before waxing Probably the most well-known technique in this bunch, it’s easy to forget that the use of pre-wax oil is a relatively recent phenomenon. When faced with especially dehydrated, sun-damaged or fragile skin, apply a light sheen of oil to the body before slapping on the sticky stuff. This creates a lipid barrier that gives extra oompf when it comes to protecting dry and delicate skins. Oil can be used under all strip, non-strip and roller waxes, regardless of brand. Protect sensitive skin by adding more oil if you need to go back over an area with your wax to catch any stragglers.  On gloves Apply a few drops to your gloved hands before you start waxing. It’ll help avoid getting sticky and you
