Wax Daddy says: wear sunscreen

Image
Use protection... wax style We should ALL be wearing sun protection, all year round, come rain or shine. You know it makes sense. But as the days get longer and the weather warms up, the need for a good SPF is more important than ever. Fact: just-waxed skin is more sun sensitive. Waxing removes some of the body’s natural protection, namely hair and dead skin cells. If that beautifully smooth, freshly waxed skin gets exposed to the sun, (a) it’s much more likely to burn, and (b) darker patches may develop where the skin becomes over-irritated (fancy technical term: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). This is especially true if the client has experienced any lifting/grazing. With this in mind, it’s really important that we are advising customers to use sunblock on their exposed bits after waxing. Remember Australia’s iconic slip-slop-slap sun protection campaign? Well, behold the Wax Daddy remix: RIP! SLIP! SLOP! It goes a little something like this.....

FAQ: how do I wax hard-to-reach hair on the sides of the back?

Image
A simple trick for waxing the sides of the torso During a back wax, it can be a struggle to reach all of the hair on the sides of the torso with your client lying flat on the couch, especially on more hirsute customers where their back and chest hair connects. That darn table top keeps getting in the way! But there is an easy and comfortable way to reach these areas without the need for any awkward twisting. When you sit your client up to wax his upper back, ask him to place one hand at a time on the opposite shoulder or behind his head. You can also ask him to lean slightly to the side in order to put a better stretch in the skin (this is particularly useful when waxing larger/heavier-set customers). Run a line of strip wax up from the waist to the underarm, and then remove away from the spine as per the rest of the back. This is also a handy trick for creating an even, natural-looking division between smooth skin on the back and the unwaxed hair on the chest and tum...

FAQ: how can I create a natural fade between smooth skin & hair when waxing men?

Image
When finishing a waxing service in areas like the lower back, upper arms, buttocks and speedo line, it can be tricky to create a natural looking transition between freshly waxed skin and the remaining body hair. Blending is a great way to soften an obvious line between hair and hairlessness, and clients appreciate the attention to detail.  You can use wax or electric clippers, or a combination of both. With strip wax Use a freshly removed paper or cloth strip that’s got wax on it. Press the waxy side lightly into the area you want to blend and remove against the direction of growth as normal. This will lift some but not all of the hair, thinning the strands out for a softer line. Repeat a few times with varying pressure until you get the desired effect. With clippers Start with a grade 3 (9mm) and trim about an inch worth of hair at the edge of the area you want to blend. Reduce the grade as you get closer to the waxed bits, resulting in a gradual s...

Wax Daddy says: take the night off

Image
Getting hot and bothered at the gym too soon after waxing is a recipe for disaster. Plucked pores and sweaty kit don't play nicely together, so it's the perfect excuse to take a night off and flop in front of the telly instead. Not that I need an excuse, but your customers' skin will thank you for it! © Andy Rouillard 2017

Freshen up, front and back!

Image
Today's topic of conversation: pre-wax intimate wipes. Oh the glamour. I provide wipes for all of my intimate waxing clients to use prior to their treatment. It doesn’t matter if they have come straight   from the shower or spent all day climbing mountains - if it’s a hot sunny day, they’ve rushed to get to the appointment or are   feeling a little nervous, everyone gets a bit sweaty in these situations and the opportunity to freshen up before their wax is   appreciated by clients. Perhaps more to the point, it’s also appreciated by me, as I'm the person about to spend the next 20 minutes within sniffing distance of their bits and bobs. 😷 I prefer the individually packaged towelettes such as the ones pictured above from Outback Organics, but packs of hand wipes or unscented baby wipes will   also do the trick (if they’re good enough for a baby’s bottom, they’re good enough for your clients’, right?). Just bear in mind their final destination and steer ...

FAQ: do I need to use a wax designed specifically for guys?

Image
“Do I need to use a separate, special wax designed specifically for guys?” I get asked this a lot. Short answer: no. Most waxes ‘for men’ are nothing more than regular wax with a ‘manly’ colour and fragrance added. The rest is marketing. Hair doesn’t care whether it grows out of a man or a woman… and neither does your wax. You'll get guys with peach fuzz that slips out with barely a whisper and girls with the toughest hair known to humankind. Also true: using a pink wax that smells of strawberries isn't going to cause a national dip in testosterone levels. Neither will your female clients start sprouting chest hair if you use a wax aimed at male customers on them. My advice? A truly great wax should do a grand job on all skin and hair types, regardless of gender. Pick a wax that you love and don't lose sleep over whether or not it smells of Old Spice and promises to mow the lawn when it's finish...

Real men exfoliate (and moisturise)

Image
Ingrown hairs... the bane of waxers worldwide. Prevention is certainly better than cure here, but surprisingly few clients realise that it’s a 2-step process: SCRUB and SLICK. Scrub the skin Regular, gentle exfoliation is essential to shift any build-up of dead skin cells that can otherwise trap the hair, plu s it also lifts new growth to the surface. First up, the key word with any form of exfoliation is 'gentle'. I've found a lot of customers will over-do it and go at things like they're sanding down a work surface: scrubbing themselves red raw on a daily basis or using harsh, scratchy products in the mistaken belief that "if it's hurting, it's working"... when in actual fact the skin just winds up irritated and this only serves to make things worse. So, gently does it: 3-4 times a week tops, and get him to use either a cosmetic scrub with spherical beads that won't scratch the skin, or a nylon/polyester mitt or cloth (I persona...

6 tricks for furless fingers

Image
Thick, dark, curly hair on the knuckles is a look many clients would prefer was left to the animal kingdom. A quick once over with your waxing spatula will soon make them feel human again and will knock years off their appearance in the process. 👍 Cold hands and fingers Chilly digits can be a nightmare to de-fuzz as cold skin will cool your wax quicker, often resulting in it becoming stuck fast. I find it helps to work in smaller sections: apply your wax as thinly as possible and do the back of the hand separately to the fingers. This gives the sticky stuff less chance to cool down between each area. If you’re still struggling to get wax off, rub the strip briskly until you feel heat coming through the paper, which will warm up any colder blobs just enough to release from the skin. Using a clean section of strip will also help.  True story: I have been known to ask clients to sit on the hand I’m not currently working on, in order to warm it up before I slather on...
