FAQ: how can I create a natural fade between smooth skin & hair when waxing men?

Image
When finishing a waxing service in areas like the lower back, upper arms, buttocks and speedo line, it can be tricky to create a natural looking transition between freshly waxed skin and the remaining body hair. Blending is a great way to soften an obvious line between hair and hairlessness, and clients appreciate the attention to detail.  You can use wax or electric clippers, or a combination of both. With strip wax Use a freshly removed paper or cloth strip that’s got wax on it. Press the waxy side lightly into the area you want to blend and remove against the direction of growth as normal. This will lift some but not all of the hair, thinning the strands out for a softer line. Repeat a few times with varying pressure until you get the desired effect. With clippers Start with a grade 3 (9mm) and trim about an inch worth of hair at the edge of the area you want to blend. Reduce the grade as you get closer to the waxed bits, resulting in a gradual s...

Wax Daddy says: take the night off

Image
Getting hot and bothered at the gym too soon after waxing is a recipe for disaster. Plucked pores and sweaty kit don't play nicely together, so it's the perfect excuse to take a night off and flop in front of the telly instead. Not that I need an excuse, but your customers' skin will thank you for it! © Andy Rouillard 2017

Ashmira Botanica Mulberry hot wax tips

Image
It's exciting to hear that Violet and Mulberry have started to land in your treatment rooms. I hope you all enjoy hanging out with them (and I hope they behave themselves)! I will add some video tutorials to my Facebook page over the coming weeks, but for those keen to get up and running here are a few tips for getting the most out of your Mulberry   peelable wax. Skip to the end for the short version!! First things first The single most important thing to know about Mulberry is that he doesn’t hang about. He sets extremely fast and for this reason he’s best mates with confident waxers who work quickly. This is a blessing for anyone who wants to cut down their treatment times, but do bear it in mind. Know where you want to go before you get him out of the pot, as too much stick twizzling will mean he starts to dry midair before even hitting the skin. Heating Mulberry is happy whether heated gently (use a timer to switch your pot on 90 minutes before you...

Wild Violet strip wax available now from Ashmira Botanica

Image
Allow me the pleasure of introducing you to my new BFF: Wild Violet. She's the first member of the Ashmira Botanica wax family and I hope you'll fall in love with her as much as I have. As strip waxes go, she's a bit of a party girl, is our Violet - just check out her bling, for starters. With her blend of natural resins and oils (argan, hazel and   capuaƧu, in case you were wondering) she also knows how to get the job done, with brilliant results every time: gliding like silk across the   contours of the body, then releasing cleanly from the skin when the moment of reckoning arrives. Smoooooth. Wanna be friends? Wild Violet can be purchased now from  Ashmira Botanica by calling 01823 428588. Pssst... she also has a brother. We call him Mulberry. More about him and his non-strip antics another day… © Andy Rouillard 2017

Wax Daddy says: be prepared!

Image
Great waxing begins before our clients even step through the salon door. Preparation can make or break a wax! None of us like to disappoint a customer who has shaved too close to their appointment or been out in the sun all day and is too pink to de-fuzz, for example. Help new clients plan ahead by popping a few words of advice up on your website or emailing some tips prior to their first treatment... “Dear lovely customers, to get the best results from your wax, please heed these words of wisdom:” No shaving or hair removal creams for 3 weeks before your appointment. No chemical exfoliants (AHA or BHA products) for 48 hours prior to waxing. No sunbathing, sunbeds or heat treatments for 24 hours beforehand. No bath oils or body lotions on the day of the appointment itself. Do use a body scrub or mitt to gently exfoliate the skin a few days before waxing. This helps to slough off any dead skin cells and lifts the hair for better results. Do wear clean, loose-fi...

Wax Daddy loves... Ruff Stuff Body Scrub

Image
In the battle against ingrown hairs, rarely can it be said that a product is actually enjoyable to use. Functional: yes. Effective: I should hope so. But enjoyable: not so often. Then along came  Ruff Stuff Body Scrub  to brighten up my shower routine. I’ve been fortunate to witness the birth and growth of this lovely little product over the last couple of years, and am now proud to stock the finished scrub in my own salon. Designed and handmade by fellow waxer and educator, Toni Keable, Ruff Stuff is a 100% natural way for waxing clients to keep their skin in tip-top condition between appointments. This fabulously fragrant sugar scrub is chock-full of coconut oil to leave skin feeling soft and moisturised after use. The sugar granules themselves do a great job in the exfoliation department and gradually dissolve on contact with water, so you never feel like you are over-scrubbing or irritating delicate skin. On top of that, the wh...
